Virtualization is a technology that many people struggle with. It’s hard to believe that you can eliminate a server within your building and gain access to all that you need online. You can run all of your programs from the cloud, too, thus saving room on your hard drive for files and other things that you may want.
There are three primary technologies that are used at Gravity Servers. This includes OpenVZ, KVM, and Hypervisor. There are some basic differences between the three and it’s important to know what they are to help you understand more about virtualization technology and how it can help you get what you need out of using clouds for hosting your content.
OpenVZ, which the brand used is SolusVM, is an open-source technology. It will only run on virtual machines that are Linux-based. It is OS virtualization only, which means no windows will be on this technology. You will also be unable to update the kernel or run a custom kernel. For those technical people who want to have customizations, this is not the ideal technology to use. Resources are shared and are efficient, but some cloud providers will oversell and thus it becomes unstable. SolusVM is the control panel that we use to ensure that the best benefits are achieved.
Proxmox is the brand we use with KVM and is also open-source technology for virtualization. The primary difference here is that each VM has its own kernel. It is a full solution that takes advantage of the hardware virtualization technology found in all of the modern CPUs. This means you have the ability to run Linux or Windows. For those who enjoy customization, it’s also possible to use custom Linux kernels as well as overall kernel customization, ensuring that everyone has full control as they wish.
With Hypervisor, we use VMWare ESXi. This offers full virtualization so that Windows or Linux can be used on the virtual machine. The primary difference with Hypervisor is the presence of advanced features that include self-healing clouds, high availability, and much more. This is a commercial product that stability and performance.
Understanding these technologies will ensure that you know exactly what you can and cannot do. There are many cloud providers that only use one of the technologies, which can be limiting in terms of being able to use Linux or windows. Another main difference is that we never oversell when using any of the technologies, so you never have to worry about instability and servers crashing.
Our goal is to ensure that those who demand high performance and server availability have their needs met and that’s why we offer three different forms of virtualization technology.
